View Full Version : Tell me, why don't you register a user name?

So, there are 7500 posts on this forum, and less than two dozen posters have a registered user name.

Why is that? What keeps all of you "Unregistered" from tossing some nickname into the ring so that we don't have to refer to you as #372? It would make the flow of discussion so much easier to follow.

Think about it: You'll give all your personal and financial information to the credit card companies, but you won't register your email address with a local discussion forum? You'll piss and moan about who's messing up the town, but you won't even attach some fake name to your comments?

C'mon, this is a challenge. Stand taller.

in reply:
WalpoleWords has not registered users for the past couple of years or so. Before that, we'd get up to 100 requests to register a day, 99 of which came from spammers (mostly former ussr) who went through all the vB rigamorale in hopes of posting their various wares here. It took way too much time to sort through and there still is no sure way of sorting out the spammers. Until there is, we're stuck with the anonymous. (Generalization: registrations work on specialized boards, but not for open communitywide discussions)

Sparky's suggestion for using a nickname and sticking with it is welcome. I'll try to make sure nicknames are not hijacked by spoofers, but no guarantee.

Here is the main reason why this doesn't work too well.
