The recent election of our neighbor Scott Brown to the US Senate seat got me thinking about illegal immigration. Though he is not for amnesty for illegal immigrants here, I really do wonder what all his solutions are?
There have been immigrants to Walpole from other countries since the early 1600's. Many of the originals came from Great Britain, and though they initially tried to compromise with the Native Americans, they ended up pretty much eliminating them in the end.
Fast forward to the waves of Irish immigrants in the 1800's, and locallly here, small groups of Italian and other European groups in the early 1900's.
My thinking is this:
Immigrants should be welcomed to our shores, because there is still a need for their labor. I think there should be a way for them to become citizens too (like there always has been).
For the millions of illegal immigrants here, there should be an exception: and that is that they should not have an equal opportunity to become citizens with those that have followed the rules. Ideally, I'd like to see them return to their homes in their home countries and start the process legally. I don't know if that is possible.
If there is no way to create a mass-return, then they should be given special status, and that status unfortunately is one of a second-class nature. They have broken our immigration laws, and should be fined heavily for doing so. I mean for thousands of dollars, and the payments can be stretched out over years. (this will help with our deficit and help pay for our new immigration policies)
They should be identified, and tracked. If they have broken other laws or made other criminal activity, they should be deported.
They should not have the right to vote for a certain period of years (I suggest 20).
Maybe Scott Brown will implement something like this. Though there is the constant comment that they do work that Americans won't do, I think that the coming economic reality for the next 10 years is that Americans are going to want those jobs, and want them badly.
:D
Just had to "Crow" about this....
