An override for $6.2 million for a new library at Stone and School Streets was approved Saturday, June 6, 2770 to 2,761, a margin of nine votes.

In a five-person race for two selectmen seats, the winners are Nancy Mackenzie with 2,455 votes and incumbent Christopher Timson, 2,126. Patrick Shield, 2,096; Christopher Poulin, 1,511; and William Hamilton, 930.

For two school committee seats, the winners are William Buckley, 3,135; and incumbent Brian Walsh, 2,742. Incumbent Dorothy Bergen received 2,509 votes.

Library Director Jerry Romelczyk called passage of the override "a proud moment for Walpole."

By coincidence, rummaging through his desk earlier in the day, Romelczyk came across a copy of a letter from trustees to Town Meeting representatives, thanking them for their encouragement for a new library building. The year was 1995.

The turnout was 5,726 (35 percent) of 16,219 registered voters.
